It was considered to be C-SPAN tier boredom. Most people cared very little for it, and just glossed over it on the news or in the opinion section of the newspaper. There of course were religious, philosophical, and world event discussions, but it was often for the sake of discussion and not something to kill each other over.

>How did people act.
People were generally gregarious. Friends and family visited each other regularly. Guys asked girls to go out over the phone or in person. It wasn't the norm to be standoffish and hostile toward others like it is today. Things were often forgiven, unlike today where it's "cut that person out of your life forever."
